Public Works

The Public Works Department includes Building, Engineering, Forestry, Greenwood Cemetery, Parks, Planning and Zoning, Street, Sanitation, Government Buildings, and Storm Water Utility.  

  • The Building Department  oversees building construction in the City limits and enforces the Minnesota Building Code.
  • Engineering includes project development and administration for public improvement projects and provides technical services to other City Departments.
  • Forestry includes preserving and maintaining the City’s urban forest on both public and private property, removing/planting trees and mosquito control.
  • Greenwood Cemetery is managed & maintained by the City of Thief River Falls. 
  • Parks includes repair and maintenance of 20 parks within the city, snow removal and sidewalk/trail snow removal. 
  • Planning and Zoning is responsible for the initiation of community development activities, and for the enforcement and development of codes and statutes related to planning, land subdivision, buildings and zoning.
  • The Street Division maintains over 60 miles streets within the city that includes snow removal, patching, crack sealing, striping, crosswalk painting, street sweeping, drainage and repair of the storm sewer system.
  • Sanitation includes the collection of refuse, alley snow removal, recycling, leaf pickup operations and composting.
  • Government Buildings provides maintenance and cleaning services to City Hall, the Public Library, the Carnegie Library and other public buildings.
