What is 9-1-1

9-1-1 is an emergency telephone number that provides immediate access to law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical service. 9-1-1 is a free call from any phone.

When to use 9-1-1

Call 9-1-1 to report a crime, fire, heart attack, or other serious medical condition or injury, or any situation requiring the immediate response of a fire truck, ambulance, or law enforcement.

What the 9-1-1 dispatcher will need to know:

  • The location of the emergency.
  • The phone number where the emergency is
  • The nature of the emergency

It is important to stay calm. Speak clearly. Stay on the line until you are told to hang up.
