Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks

February 22, 2024: The outdoor rinks are closed for the season due to ice deterioration. 

The City of Thief River Falls Public Works Department maintains 3 outdoor ice skating rinks. Warming houses are located at both parks. 

• Engelstad Park has a leisure rink and a hockey rink with boards
• Northrop Park has one hockey rinks with boards 

 The warming houses will remain open during these times UNLESS:

1. The air temperature is -10 degrees or below.
2. The windchill is -20 or below. Even though we live in Northern Minnesota, during extreme cold weather, prolonged outdoor activities are not recommended. 
3. We receive a snowfall of more than two inches. This could delay cleaning the rinks and opening the building
4. Unusually warm temperatures have softened the ice, making the rinks unsafe for skating.
5. There may be some days when hours are shortened or in some instances closed due to zero skaters or staffing shortages.

**While the above guidelines are generally the criteria which will be followed to determine outdoor rink and warming house closures, we reserve the right to close rinks whenever we feel it is in the best interest and safety of the participants.

If you are interested in reserving an outdoor hockey rink for an organized team practice or game, please contact the Public Works Department at 218-681-8506. We allow one reservation per day.
